Cold Weather Ops
Handling battery-powered parade audio in below-freezing conditions
Executive Summary
Below-Freezing Route Conditions
Approximately 28°F
Long Nighttime Route on Michigan Avenue
A Large Public Crowd Scale
Big enough that operational mistakes would be obvious immediately
The Challenge
Winter changes everything: battery behavior, handling speed, crew comfort, and how quickly a moving system can be adjusted on the fly.
Cold weather compresses your margin for error. Add nighttime operation, moving audio positions, huge crowds, and a public route, and the system has to be simple enough to trust at a glance.
The Solution
The Bass50’s battery-first design kept the package mobile while allowing for quick battery swapping to account for a slightly faster discharge rate in cold weather. Unlike other devices where, when the battery dies it requires a recharge to keep using, the Bass50’s battery can be swapped out in a matter of seconds. The team had a set of backup batteries ready to go so running out of power was never a concern.
The Result
Battery-powered audio is not just for pop-ups and small patios. It can solve real route-based production problems in cold weather, at scale.
